Operating System Review
Windows Vista Is Microsoft’s first new operating system in over five years and the successor to Windows XP. After five years of development there is a definite “Is that it?” vibe about Windows Vista. There are certainly a lot of individual features within the operating system, but Vista’s new layout feels clumsy and if you are used to the older versions, you will have to relearn how to navigate through some of its features, like MS Word. Windows Vista Word is completely different and feels like driving a stick shift in England when you are used to driving an automatic in the US. The benefits over the older version won’t be apparent to the basic user and can be extremely confounding to use in the beginning. There are definitely a lot of individual features within the operating system, but the value is in the execution. Honestly, Vista is just XP with redesigned navigation features, it’s a disappointment. However, if you take the time to relearn the system, it is a fully functional operating system that works well and rarely crashes, but did XP! Compared with Mac OS X 10.4, Windows Vista feels like Captaining a rusty skupper down a log jammed river, almost as though it’s still based on DOS.
Regardless of the addition of a system-wide, built-in Search, and various attempts to break away from the staidly old directory trees, you still need to dig down one level to even access the Search. This is not a very objective operating system as preference is always given to Microsoft products. There are far and away too many dependencies on Microsoft products (of which there are many), imagine THAT! The question remains, is Microsoft Vista a horrible operating system? Not at all, just disappointing for PC users hoping that Microsoft would offer something truly exciting to finally leap ahead of Apple. They failed.
Mac now we’re talking! Mac’s seamlessly easy to use operating system utilizes Safari as its browser. Some would argue that Safari is too simplistic, but that was the whole point behind its design. Safari was designed to be simple and extremely user friendly. The OS X operating system is fast and easy to use. I personally have never had it lock-up, crash or go down for any reason. I was a PC fanatic prior to purchasing a Mac, but the ease of use, dependability and ability to integrate non-Apple features is very accommodating. OS X is a fantastic and superior operating system. It is so user friendly, hence simple, but will take you to whatever level of functionality you require, you decide the functionality and control the ease of use, not the other way around. Nice Job Steve Jobs!
